Balancing Olympic dreams and a passion for healthcare: Maya Singletary

Maya Singletary embodies Ivy’s core values of Serve Others, Love What You Do, Grow. As a devoted patient coordinator at Ivy Rehab, her days are filled with compassion and care for others. But outside the clinic, Maya’s passion ignites on the track, where she’s sprinting toward her Olympic dreams with unwavering determination.

Maya’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the pursuit of excellence. “I grew up in a rural area with a lack of resources, so I wanted to go into a field where I could help people,” Maya reflects. “Healthcare seemed like the perfect fit.”

Balancing the demands of her career with the rigorous demands of Olympic Trials training is no small feat. Yet, Maya navigates this delicate equilibrium with grace, fueled by an innate drive to succeed.

“I prioritize staying organized and maintaining my health and nutrition,” she says. “Even during breaks at work, you’ll find me stretching and foam rolling. It’s a reminder that everyone, including the patient coordinator, is committed to their fitness journey.”

Maya’s introduction to the world of track and field began in 8th grade, a seemingly late start by athletic standards. “I ran the 400m once in 8th grade and said I’m never doing this again,” she laughs.

However, fate had other plans. Guided by her high school coach’s connection to UNC Charlotte, Maya found herself immersed in the world of college-level athletics. “In high school, I started running with college athletes, and that’s where my journey truly took flight.”

Throughout her athletic and professional endeavors, Maya has found unwavering support from her Ivy Rehab team. “Encouragement and support have been constants,” she acknowledges. “My clinic director, Tanya Sotillo-Pennix, has been instrumental in understanding my athletic goals and providing valuable treatment tips.”

The lessons Maya learned from her dual roles as a patient coordinator and athlete have deeply enriched her personal and professional growth. “Perseverance, time management, and maintaining a strong mind-body connection are invaluable,” she reflects. “Setting goals both on and off the track has been key.”

Looking ahead, Maya’s vision extends far beyond the track. “In the future, I plan to continue to develop my own nonprofit to bridge the gap between provider relationships,” she reveals. “By fostering stronger connections within the healthcare community, we can enhance patient care.”

With her sights set on the Olympic Trials in mid-July, Maya remains steadfast in her pursuit of greatness. Competing in the 400m is the culmination of years of hard work and dedication. Beyond her professional and athletic pursuits, Maya finds solace in her passion for community engagement. Developing her nonprofit is a labor of love. Maya shares that she envisions hosting various community events that are both fun and informative, while creating a lasting impact.

Maya’s accolades on the track are as impressive as her dedication to her community. Holding school records at UNC Charlotte and earning First Team All-C-USA honors, Maya’s legacy is one of perseverance and excellence. As she continues to weave her narrative, her journey serves as an inspiration to all who dare to dream. And her Ivy family will be cheering her on every step of the way!
